Subforums

Postby Steve » Wed Jan 16, 2008 3:49 pm

What does everyone think about the idea of having some subforums? With the new software we can have forums inside forums. This might be useful for keeping things like NTWNS, the LFNS and other such chatter in its own home. Also having the Le Mans 2008 forum inside the Events forum. Opinions please.

I think it's a very good idea.

I would certainly find it useful with events, so that instead of a 10 page thread on one event, we could have seperate threads for travel & accommodation, registering, who's going, what's happening, updates, etc etc, all nicely contained in one place, not jumbled up in the events forum.

Would it result in more work for the mods though, constantly shifting mis-placed posts?

It may be a little more work but can't imagine much. At the moment people are good at keeping things in the right place. Very little gets moved.

OK, let's give it a try and see how it looks. We can always change back. I'll create a few in Events.

I think it works Steve. It'll be good for events like the Santa Skate, where there are six threads about different aspects of the event.

Are the events sorted by last post, or by date of event? If it's the latter then it makes a good calendar.

It would probably be good for events like Le Mans, where you have multiple threads for the same instance, but I'm don't think it's too appropriate for the skates.

The subforums are in the order you specify and stay fixed. I've sorted them by date. Can you suggest any others we need?

I think it's too early for many of the themed London skates: EasterSkate, Haloween Skate, Santa Skate...

One for the Paris Slalom World Cup might be good as several of us travel over for that, but again, it's a way off yet.

Love it! I think a streetskates sub-forum for the UK Scene would work very well.

In the same way, would suggest to have a Marathon forum rather than having an additional one for LIM...
Goodwood and LIM would go in it...

Perhaps it would be better in Events to have sub-forums by event type?

I.e.

Freestyle = Freestyle weekend in Gladbach, PSWC, Eastbourne Extreme, BattleUK III, etc.

London themed skates = Easterbunny, Haloween, Santa, etc.

Rollerdisco = Derby Rollerworld all nighters, RollerXpress, rollerjam, etc.

Marathon = Goodwood, London, Berlin, etc.

Stupidly long endurance races for the criminally insane = Le Mans.

The problem there is that you lose the "calendar"... :(

That's an option but where would something like Eastbourne fit in?

Eastbourne Extreme is primarily a freestyle skating weekend, no? OK, there's a short streetskate followed by an al fresco rollerdisco, but I'd still put it down as freestyle.

What are you calling freestyle? Freestyle slalom?

When I say freestyle I use it as an umbrella term to include freestyle slalom, speed slalom, slides, jumps, freeride tricks and dance. I don't think I'm the only one... I hope not!

I must admit that I'm having the same issue with Goodwood Roller Marathon. I know it's a race but we are trying really hard to make it a family day out for skaters of all types (only about 30% was in lycra last year) so having it the speed group isn't ideal IMHO.

Having one events forum kinda sorts itself out as threads with lots of chatter or threads for events that are soon tend stay at the top anyway. May I please suggest we loose the sub forums, at least for events that just have one thread (I can imagine a Le Mans sub forum being useful).

As someone who no longer skates, I concur.

I like the subforums. If I see 'freestyle' is orange, then I check it. Otherwise I don't bother. I like the fact that the events forum isn't orange just because someone made a random comment in a Le Mans thread or something. There will always be the odd event that doesn't quite fit into one of the categories, but that doesn't mean that the subforums should be got rid of all together. Perhaps the categories should change, or an additional category be added.

Since the new version has been running I just click on "View unread posts" and decide which ones to read from the list of thread titles, then click "Mark forums read". Don't know how many others do that, but it means the forum structure doesn't really make any difference.
