UCL Research: Show off a GPS track of your skate by 11 June!

Postby slorimer » Wed Jun 05, 2013 7:25 pm

I'd like to tell you about our small project at UCL which we are calling Cities for Human Locomotion, which can be found at https://www.ucl.ac.uk/sustainable-cities/smallgrants/small-grants-2013/gcsc-2012-13/marshall.

In a nutshell we're looking into any human powered modes of travel outside the "norm" of walking and cycling - including skateboards, rollerblades, push scooters etc. We're trying to scope out what is known about these modes. Ultimately we're interested in possible cities of the future where those modes could have a more prominent role (rollerblade arcades? skateboarding superhighways? etc)

We would like to put out a call for any rollerblader to give us a GPS track of one or more trips this week. We are asking volunteers to fill out a form at https://opinio.ucl.ac.uk/s?s=24290, go on a trip or multiple with a piece of GPS tracking software on your smartphone (examples of apps that can do this are endomodo, trails, mytracks, strava, and others at http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/article/best-iphone-and-android-apps-for-cycling-35227/), name it using a nickname (that you have selected and given us on the form), then upload it onto the UCL dropbox at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/dropbox/ or email to Steve Lorimer (s.lorimer@ucl.ac.uk) by the end of Tuesday 11 June.

If you get this before the Wednesday skate tonight, have a beautiful evening, and please get in touch with any questions!

Yours sincerely

Have you considered going onto Strava and searching for inline skate segments?

The inline mode on Strava is a bit limited with the amount of data it provides, I prefer to use the cycle mode and list my journeys under different bikes which are actually different skates, ie Bonts, Quads, Twisters.

I would be happy to share these journeys for this project.

That is great to hear from you guys. Have a great Friday night skate. It should be a bumper crop of people on hand tonight.

I've got a load of Wednesday night skate tracks from the last 11months on Strava, but no idea how to send them to you.... They're all saved as bike rides, but under equipment I put 'skates' if you want to follow me I think you can grab the tracks from there. Under Ben Gumbie.

We've purchase an account that will allow us to download the GPS tracks from strava to get ourselves started, so we will definitely look out for your tracks there!
