Skatemania:Preston roller marathon Sun 12th May 2013

Postby NS Jason » Thu Feb 14, 2013 12:01 pm

This is sounding a bit like the Goodwood of the past. Thought people here might want to know about it.
It's on a mile long cycle track at the university of central Lancashire, looks flat and smooth.

Anyone here thinking of going, or is it too far north for you lot? :P

I am currently toying between doing the full marathon, or doing the half AND the full.

1 mile pretty fast circuit with a small bridge to climb over. The wind swirls a bit if there is any and can give a great boost round some of the bends. Learn where it helps and use it to attack on the last lap for your break away then when everyone else is trying to catch you up wind up your sprint in the final chicane and nail the cross overs on the last bend to the finish line.

Some guy called Nick Abbott appears to be running it, if that name rings any bells. The contact phone number on the skatemaina website is 07718 088072

took me a while to work out what you meant by that, I do see what you mean. I've paid by paypal so if it turns out to be fake within a month I can get that money back easily enough, and the organisers don't have any money details from me.

Why don't you phone the venue and check if there is a skate booking for the 12th of May? The UCLan arena can be reached on 01772 201 201 (I got that number myself, not from anyone connected to the skatemania event)

Worst case I am going to show up to that track on the day with my skates anyway.

I know Nick well, he runs Skatefit sessions at Wigan Roller Rink, and is a regular skater there. He's putting a lot of work into growing his SkateMania outfit, and has great vision for lots of skating events. The more support the events get, the more there'll be, as it stands.

I believe Nick's company have also taken on the role of UK Bont distributors - only recently agreed AFAIK, hence why the site may not yet be up and running.

I've signed up & paid for the marathon. Not gonna skate it competitively, just aiming to beat my indoor quads time of 2hrs 35, from last September...probably be on my GT90s so hopefully 2hrs...or less ;).

Would be good to meet some of the posters on here and put faces to forum monikers :)

Oh no I forgot to do my earlybird registration for the half too!

Already registered for the full, but I figure what's the harm in doing the half as well, it's not as if I need a qualifying time for Berlin

if its legit (i going to contact the uni) we would be up for going, ill try to drum up some Brighton skaters. The more we can support these events, the more it will encourage organiser to put more on. (y)

Hi Everyone

Anyone wanting to discuss our events please don't hesitate to contact me on 07718 088072

If anyone would like to contact the arena to confirm the number is 01772 761000 not the number stated in a previous post as this the uni not the sports arena as they are at two seperate locations.

We are also looking at a 24 hour event in August if anyone is interested.

We have been involved in the event business for a number of years and have spent some time and money developing these new skating events which we have wanted to organise being skaters ourselves.

We have also worked with councils across the UK inc Brighton to Scotland and in between putting on events.

We have also looked at a time trial on Maderia Drive in Brighton and a festival of skating weekend.

Our aim is to build more events each year and sustain roller sports for mass participation for everyone

Thank You

We have the BLITZ festival happening on the 24/25/26th August, with a Roller-marathon organised for the 26th, Monday morning.

It might make more sense if we joined forces rather than having 2 different events happening at the same time, I've dropped you a text or feel free to get in touch, I'm on: 07751 503 996

Phil.

Not long to go now! I've been up there a few times now, skated 26.4 miles (27 laps, it's a 0.99 mile track) twice - once on my GT90s in 2hrs 30, and again on quads in 2hrs 40. If I can get near 2hrs in my GT90s I'll be a happy man...

The uni who own the track say it's 1.5km, so that would make it 28 laps, right?

The organizers are now saying it is not a race, have no chip timing and won't even have anyone counting the laps of the lead group.

I'm still going to do it anyway, might even bring my slalom skates for some messing about afterwards

So I hear FISS measured it at 1.6km so that would be 26 and a half laps for a full marathon....it's sounding like a bit of a shambles

Yep, I worked it out as about 26.5 laps, NSJason. Used the iSkate app on my iphone, my mate has one of those GPS watches and it gave similar measurements. The info pack says 26 laps for the marathon - that's 25.9 miles...I'm aiming to do 27 laps in under 2hrs 30.

Well, we came, we skated...we got royally pissed on. Horizontal rain!

My GT90s are still absolutely sopping wet. The Twincams are bathing in paraffin and have been since Sunday...Lord knows how many will still be spinning.

My time was disappointing - I thought I was going to get under 2hrs 30 but ended up 2hrs 40 for 27 laps (whatever actual mileage that equated to - definitely over 26.2miles. I didn't use my phone & GPS app - good decision as there's no way it'd be working now!).

Being passed by some derby skaters on quads in the last few laps was not a pleasant experience - no disrespect to quads or the skaters concerned - in fact massive respect as on 90mm wheels I should have had a major advantage, shouldn't I? I thought my skating was really beginning to progress this year, but clearly not as much as I thought. Oh well, at least I have a genuine measure of how much I need to improve my fitness and technique for next time!

I'm going to pretend that the guy who finished first on speed skates (James?) in 1hr 12 had had some bionic implants or something...I honestly don't know how he managed to stay in that almost horizontal tucked stance for the entire skate.

Mind you, being over 40 and not in the best shape isn't going to help me get there ;). Also, I think the fact I've skated 26+ miles 4 times in the last 6 weeks, inc Sunday, might not have worked in my favour.

Anyway, a good day of skating, good to meet some peeps from here, and here's to the next time! (b)
